The Prabal Gurung label has been solidly building momentum for a few seasons now, its profile being raised by many high profile red carpet appearances – check out Sarah Jessica Parker’s multiple Prabal Gurung outfits for the ‘I Don’t Know How She Does It’ press trail. The Spring/Summer 2012 collection however is perhaps slightly less red-carpet friendly than his previous work, but that’s certainly not a bad thing.
For me there’s three main things to take away from this collection – white with various tones of purple, cut-out net paneling, and a darkly beautiful floral print. The later was designed in conjunction with a London based printmaker and features a series of decaying flowers arranged as if viewed through a kaleidoscopic and used to amazing effect on a sharply tailored silk suit in particular. White has certainly been a trend coming out of New York quite heavily so far and when paired with the sharp violet tones it’s given a new life. The white pleated dress with metallic violet dripping down the skirt is sure to go down well with buyers. Sheer cut-out panels backed in net add a delicate aspect to an otherwise fairly heavily weighted collection, allowing for a sense of lightness to balance out a sometimes quite jarring print.
There’s a lot of ideas in this collection and whilst for the most part I’m a big fan, I do wish some of these ideas had been explored a bit more throughout the show. There’s a look featuring a deep purple lace top and violet silk skirt that had a lot of potential for further pieces. However by the time we see the range in stores I’m sure it will have been fleshed out and hopefully include some more separate pieces playing with these details more thoroughly.
